Performing Arts Curriculum Intent

In the Performing Arts department, we aim to nurture passionate, imaginative and inquisitive individuals. Our curriculum considers the needs of a child holistically, developing social and communication skills as well as providing students with practical performance skills in each  knowledge specific discipline.

Our vision is to engage, empower and inspire students to develop their creative potential, as well as enabling them to make sense of the world around them in a safe and expressive environment in which students feel confident in defining themselves in relation to others, and the society in which they live.

The units explored throughout KS3 develop independent thinking, increase perception, imagination, creativity, reflection and physical dexterity; skills which can be transferred to other areas of experience and learning.

At KS4, we aim to allow students to develop a deeper understanding of the Performing Arts; it’s culture, background and influences, as well as an accurate knowledge of how the Performing Arts industry operates in today’s society.

Our assessment in Performing Arts is underpinned by three areas of focus; the process of exploration, performance led and peer/self-reflection. Teacher assessment in the Performing Arts classroom is fluid, due to the continuous process of exploration and reflection. It is in these moments that students demonstrate their ability to digest content and respond creatively to stimuli throughout the devising process. This contributes towards the overall assessment in which students demonstrate their practical skill after each key unit.  Our assessments provide students with the opportunity to showcase their creative thinking, practical knowledge and skill.

We aim to further build on our students appreciation of the Performing Arts outside of the classroom through our enrichment offer, in which students are provided with the opportunity to engage with peripatetic music lessons, choir, Performing Arts showcase events, annual school productions, The Shakespeare for Schools Festival, Performing Arts residential weekends, theatre visits.
